(Universe Leather Shop is one of those rare old leather stores in Hong Kong that has been around for decades. It first opened on January 9, 1963, and has now been running for 63 years.

In today’s Hong Kong, it’s more than just a shop — it carries a lot of memories for the city. But times have changed. After the pandemic, the market shifted a lot, and demand for traditional leather goods dropped significantly. It became harder and harder for the store to keep going.

The owner, Ms. Wong (Vera), shared that after losing a family member last April, she slowly made the decision to close the shop. It wasn’t just about business pressure, but also a personal life decision.

The store was originally planned to close at the end of last December, but it stayed open a bit longer to sort out inventory and wrap things up with long-time customers and friends.

Now, after all these years, the shop is finally preparing to close its doors for good.)
